6 Foods to add in & why

Sweet Potatoes

A complex carbohydrate - full of fiber that is beneficial to our gut and for blood sugar regulation. Good source of Vitamin A, B6, C, and potassium. My favorite way to eat them is to toss in olive oil, salt/pepper/garlic and chopped rosemary. Cook in the air fryer until crispy and add to a grain bowl.

Dark, Green Leafy Greens

Kale, bok choy, arugula, , chard, and spinach all contain chlorophyll (and yes you should eat your chlorophyll rather than use the drops). Abundant in antioxidants these super greens have the power to decrease risk of cancer and feed gut bacteria. Kale salads are currently my go-to side. Make sure to massage with olive oil or a dressing to break it down a bit before consuming.

Berries

All berries are extremely high in antioxidants, fiber, and Vitamin C. My favorite way to eat them is in a yogurt bowl with granola or in overnight oats. They also make for a great salad topper.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate that is made with 70-85% cocoa has been proven to be a powerful source of antioxidants. Rich with polyphenols and flavenoids that protect our body’s tissues from oxidative stress. I like to add cacao nibs to smoothies & yogurt bowls, I also enjoy dark chocolate bars and add peanut butter to them for a dessert.

Chia Seeds

These small but mighty seeds are my favorite addition to breakfast. When prepared correctly (make sure to submerge and lit sit in liquid for a bit) they are full of soluble fiber. They also contain omega-3’s, protein, calcium, and magnesium. I prepare them with my overnight oats or stir into a smoothie and let sit for a few minutes so that they absorb the liquid.

Ezekiel Bread

This and sourdough bread are always stocked in our house. This sprouted bread is whole grain and contains several different types of seeds/grains such as legumes, wheat, millet, barley, spelt, lentils, and soybeans. Each slice has about 4-5g of protein. I use it for avocado toast, sandwiches, and even with some butter & flaky sea salt as a snack.
